The Bulldog-Baton Rouge

After visiting the Louisiana Art & Science Museum we were looking for someplace to get a bite to eat. We would have walked downtown except we had used up our allotted 2 hours on the parking meter and I didn’t want to look for another parking space. City of Baton Rouge take note your parking restrictions lost your local downtown businesses money.

My glass of Gotta Get Up To Get Down.

It was about 3:30 pm and the place was pretty empty. They have some monitors that show the beer that they have on tap but having to wait for the next screen of many and then remember what ones looked good was not working. They do have 81 taps to select from. I asked the bartender if they have a printed tap list and he gave me a 2 page list of what they had. We sat at the bar and asked the bartender if he had any dark beer that he could recommended. He said that he liked Gotta Get Up To Get Down from Wiseacre. We asked for a taste and he went off to get us one. He came back with 3 tastings, the one he liked and 2 others that we may also like. We decided on Gotta Get Up To Get Down and ordered a couple of pints.

Now we were ready to get something to eat. You don’t order from the bar but instead there is a window that is where the kitchen is and you order and pay there. I don’t know how you are suppose to pay for the food as I had given the bar my credit card holding the tab open. Fortunately my spouse used her credit card to pay.

The food is the normal bar food, all the food you like to eat that is bad for you. I had a Philly Cheese Steak sandwich and some onion rings. Lisa ordered a Mushroom-Onion-Jack half pound hamburger with sweet potato fries.

The Philly Cheese Steak was packed with thinly sliced grilled steak with a sprinkling of grilled sliced bell peppers, onions and mushrooms. On top of all this is a layer of swiss cheese. All this was served on a toasted french roll and served open faced. The onion rings were made to order and very fresh. While the breading was ok it was a bit heavy, I prefer a lighter batter.

This was more than I could eat in one sitting. I ended up eating half of the sandwich and all the onion rings, onion rings aren’t very good heated up later.

Lisa’s Mushroom-Onion-Jack half pound burger looked like the ones you see in the commercials. Everything looked very fresh with generous portions of lettuce, tomato, red onion and pickle. She said it was delicious and that the sweet potato fries were done just right.

All in all this is a place that is worth going out of your way to get to. I highly recommend visiting if you are in the area. Be sure to go onto the patio and see the beer tap fountain.
