July 10th, 2018 we arrived at Dolores River Campground. This campground is located just east of Dolores, Colorado along the Dolores River above the McPhee Reservoir along Highway 145. It is located among the trees and right along the river. There are 2 fishing ponds that are private the the campground so you don’t need a license to fish. You are required to catch and release.

In the town of Dolores there is a liquor store. In Colorado grocery stores only carry 3.2 beer. For all other liquor you have to go to the liquor store.

On the subject of liquor Dolores has a nice little brewpub, Dolores River Brewery. They have a couple of nice darker brews but watch out for the Death Star, abv: 15.4%. Their wood fired pizza is excellent.

Also in town is a post office, we had our passport photos taken there, a library, and on Wednesday at 4:00pm across from Dolores River Brewery, that is how we found the brewery, is a small farmers market. Montezuma Restaurant, on the left as you drive back to town from Dolores River Campground has good food. Loop’s Coffee House & Bistro has has good coffee and the WiFi is fast. We didn’t try any other places in Dolores but there is a grocery store a couple of other restaurants but not much else.

One of the local attractions is Mesa Verde National Park. It is a short drive less than 30 minutes by way of Cortez. You can read our blog entry on Mesa Verde National Park here:

Another place to visit that is close by is the Anasazi Heritage Center, this is what the sign says on Highway 145. If you are looking it up it will say “Canyons Of The Ancients Visitor Center & Museum”. This is a interesting place and taking the short hike up the mountain to the “Escalante Pueblo” is worth it. Also you will have a wonderful view of McPhee Reservoir.

You can also take Highway 145 east along Dolores river into the mountains. This is a nice drive and if you are making a day of it you can end up in Durango. We didn’t do this as there was a slide that had the road closed.

We found the campground relaxing and comfortable. From pizzas on Wednesday to the ice cream social on Saturdays there is something for everyone.
